ALLEN, John J., Jr. - Acting Master's Mate. Born about 1843 in Warren, Bristol Co., Rhode Island, son of John J. & Mary T. Allen. Appointed Acting Master's Mate 18 May 1863. Assigned to the Southfield in 1864. On 10 April 64 he wrote a letter to Gideon Welles requesting a copy of his appointment to Acting Master's Mate that he lost "at the time of the disaster of the United States Steamer Sumter." Lost all of his personal belongings when the Southfield sank. Tendered his resignation 23 April 64 to Gideon Welles but received no confirmation from Gideon Welles. Assigned to the Tacony. Received the copy of his appointment on 5 May 64. Left the Tacomy at New Bern, NC on 15 July on sick leave and arrived at Warren, RI on 21 July, sick with chills & fever. Resigned 22 Aug 64.

Lived as a Farmer in Lees Mills, Washington Co., NC after the war. Died about 1890. Widow Easter applied 1 Aug 1890 for a Widow's Pension.

CAMPBELL, Carter W. - 1st Class Boy - Black - Born in Charles City, VA. Enlisted 17 June 62 at Norfolk, VA; a 21 year old 5'4" Farmhand. Mustered 1 July 62. Received a bullet wound to the left leg as the Southfield sank on 19 April 64. He escaped through the marsh or in a small boat and was picked up by the Ceres. Treated in the hospital at New Bern, NC. Served on the Ceres until 28 June 65. Discharged 17 July 65 from the Constellation at Roanoke Island, NC. Married 27 Dec 1869 to Henrietta Bowie in Washington, DC. Enlisted 8 June 61 as a Landsman at New York. Captured 19 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. POW at Andersonville, GA. (Squad 10, 2nd Mess) Died 18 June 1864 of Chronic Diarrhea in the stockade at Andersonville, GA. Grave 2149. Listed as G. S. Conant.

CRADLE, William Robert - 3d Class Boy - Black - Born June 1850 in Hyde Co., NC. Enlisted 12 Dec 63 at Washington, NC, a 14 year old Farmer. First served on the Louisiana until 15 Jan 64 when he was transferred to the Southfield . Thrown into the water during the sinking of the Southfield and rescued by the boat's crew and taken to the Miami. Transferred briefly in May 65 to the Constellation before being transferred to the Monticello. Discharged 19 July 65 as 1st Class Boy. Appears to have worked as a Porter in NY in the 1870's before showing up in 1890 as a Janitor in Newport, RI. Filed 8 March 1900 for a pension. Married about 1894 to Susan E. Married again to Annie Elizabeth. Died 4 Aug 1932 in Newport, RI. Buried in Island Cemetery.

DAW, Edward - Landsman. Born about 1840 in Brooklyn, NY. Enlisted 5 June 61 at New York. POW after the Battle of Plymouth, NC. Escaped. Discharged 30 June 65.

DEAN, George Albert - Assistant Engineer. Born 27 Jan 1841 in Frederick Co., MD, son of William & Catherine Dean. Enlisted as an Apprentice Machinist from Frederick, MD. Rated Acting Assistant Engineer 6 Jan 64. Captured 19 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Exchanged 18 Oct 64 at Aiken's Landing, VA. Resigned 29 March 65. Married to Emma, dau. of Captain William A. Gorton. Superintendent of the Merchants & Miners' Transportation Co., Baltimore, MD. After retiring he moved back to Frederick where he served as a member of the Board of County Commissioners. Also served as a director in the Frederickstown Savings Institution. Emma died 7 July 1901 in Baltimore, MD. In 1905 at age 60, he married his second cousin, age 25, Miss Alice Reynolds Dean, dau. of John Albert Dean. Died 11 Sept 1922 and buried in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Frederick, MD.  Headstone.

EASON, Albert - 1st Class Boy & Powder Boy - Black - Born about 1848 in Gates Co., NC. Enlisted 19 Dec 63 as 3rd Class Boy under the alias Elbert Eastman at Roanoke Island, NC, a 14 year old Farmer & Laborer. Assigned to the Commodore Hull and then assigned 6 Feb 64 to the Southfield. During the Battle of Plymouth he wounded his eyes when the powder flashed on gun No. 1 on the port side of the bow of the Southfield. Escaped capture and picked up 23 April 64 by the Miami. Taken to Roanoke Island and then taken to New Bern aboard the Undine and admitted to the hospital in New Bern, NC. Discharged 1 May 65 at New Bern. Also used the name Albert Wilson. Lived in Oriental, Pamlico Co., NC. Died 15 Nov 1922 of Apoplexy at James City, Craven Co., NC. Buried in Meadows / Brownsville Cemetery. Widow Siddie applied 12 April 1923 for a pension.

ELLINGSWORTH, William H. - Ordinary Seaman. Born 1842 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of William & Eliza Ellingsworth. Enlisted 12 Nov 62 at Baltimore, MD, a 21 year old Sail Maker living at 218 Lombard St. 5'1" Captured 19 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Held captive at Andersonville, GA. Exchanged 27 Sept 64 at Atlanta, GA. Paroled 8 Oct 1864 at Richmond, VA. Delivered 16 Oct 1864 to Cox's Landing on the James River, VA. Also served on the Alleghany. Applied 26 March 1891 for an Invalid Pension.

ELLIS, George - Ordinary Seaman. Born about 1841 in England. Enlisted 5 June 61 at New York, a 20 year old Carpenter. Transferred 2 May 64 to the Whitehead. Transferred to the Sassacus. Discharged 30 June 64.

FARR, Benjamin F. - Captured at Plymouth, NC. POW at Andersonville, GA. (Squad 6, 2nd Mess) Admitted 6 Aug 64 to the prison hospital with Dysentery. Returned to the stockade. Paroled 8 Oct 1864 at Richmond, VA. Delivered 16 Oct 1864 to Cox's Landing. Possibly from Hulton, Allegheny Co., PA.

FARRAND, James B. - Acting 2nd Assistant Engineer. Enlisted 6 July 1862 from MI. Appointed 12 Nov 62 as Acting 2nd Assistant Engineer. On board the Southfield when it was sunk by the ram Albemarle. As the Southfield sank on 19 April 64, he escaped in a small boat and was picked up by the Ceres. Served later on the Union Ironclad Manhattan. Appointed 26 May 65 to Acting 1st Assistant Engineer. Honorably discharged 7 Oct 1868. Living in Port Huron, Saint Clair Co., MI in 1890.

FLETCHER, Frederick - 3d Class Boy - Black - Born in Perquimans Co., NC. Enlisted 12 Dec 63 at Roanoke Island, NC, a 14 year old 5 foot tall Farmer. Assigned 31 March 64 to the Southfield. Missing after Battle of Plymouth, NC.

FRENCH, Charles A. - Acting Volunteer Lieutenant. Born about 1822 in Maine. Rated Acting Master 13 Aug 61. Promoted to Acting Volunteer Lieutenant with a mark of appreciation of gallantry 18 Dec 62. Assigned 27 Nov 63 to the Southfield. In command of the Southfield when she was sunk by the Albemarle. In command of the U.S.S. Miami on 5 May 64 during the Battle of Albemarle Sound against the Albemarle. Acting Volunteer Lieutenant-Commander on 30 May 65. Honorably discharged on 21 Oct 65. Lived in San Francisco, CA.

FRICK, Charles - 2nd Class Fireman. Rescued after the Southfield sank. Onboard the Whitehead 23 April 64.

GARRETT, Prince Albert - 2nd Class Boy - Escaped slave. Born March 1846, son of Thompson Garrett. Owned by James Johnson. Enrolled in early 1864 at Norfolk, VA. Sent to the navy yard at Portsmouth, VA. Transferred on the Louisiana to the Miami. Also served on the Commodore Hull at Washington, NC until being transferred to the Southfield. Broke his arm during the Battle of Plymouth and was put in a house at Plymouth and eventually was captured. He states, "they took me to Hamilton and then we started for Castle Thunder about 20 of us of the prisoners got away at Tarboro, N.C." From there he went to New Bern, NC. Also used the name Prince Johnson. Married 30 March 1896 to widow Annie F. Died 18 May 1919 at James City, Craven Co., NC. Buried in Meadows / Brownsville Cemetery. Widow Annie Johnson applied 13 June 1919 for a pension.

GASKILL, William - 1st Class Boy. Former Slave. Born 1848 in Beaufort Co., NC, son of William Keys. Owned by Richard Gaskill. Enlisted 14 Dec 63 at Washington, NC, a 15 year old Farmer. Assigned to the Valley City, Commodore Hull for a few days & then the Southfield. Rescued after the Southfield sank. Onboard the Miami 23 April 64. Transferred 18 May 64 to the Commodore Barney and went to the Norfolk Navy Yard. Discharged 31 July 65. Lived at 70 Pine St., Norfolk, VA.

GILMORE, Joseph E. - Ordinary Seaman - Born 1839 in Belfast, Waldo Co., ME the son of David & Eliza Gilmore. Enlisted 11 July 62 at Baltimore, MD, a 24 year old Mariner & Cook. GOFF, William F. - Acting 2nd Assistant Engineer. Born in and a resident of Massachusetts. Rated Acting Second Assistant Engineer on 24 Feb 63. Assigned to the North Atlantic Squadron in 1864. Captured 19 April 64 at Plymouth, NC after the sinking of the Southfield. Exchanged 18 Oct 1864 at Aikens Landing, VA. Resigned 21 March 65.

GORDON, Lewis - Ordinary Seaman. Mulatto. Born about 1826 in Detroit, Michigan. Enlisted 12 July 62 as a Landsman at Baltimore, MD, a 36 year old 6'1" Carpenter. Assigned 31 March 63 to the Underwriter. Transferred to the Southfield. Transferred 2 May 64 to the J. N. Seymour. Transferred to the Commodore Barney. Discharged 3 June 65.

HYMAN, Benjamin - Enlisted 63 under the alias of Benjamin Danniel. First served for 6 months on the gunboat Seymore and then on the Southfield. Struck in the back of the head by a shell fragment during the Battle of Plymouth. Treated onboard the ship by surgeon. Discharged 65. Reenlisted 25 Jan 65 as Private, Co. F, 37th USCT. Mustered out 11 Feb 67. Worked as a Blacksmith in Tarboro after the war. Filed 2 Dec 1889 for a pension.

JACKSON, Charles - 1st Class Boy - Black. Born at Newburgh, Orange Co., NY. Enlisted 27 May 63 at Plymouth, NC; a 21 year old Hostler. Assigned 1 July 63 to the Southfield. Later served on the John L. Lockwood. Discharged 14 June 65.

WEST, Francis M. - Born about 1842 in Baton Rouge, LA. Enlisted 27 Oct 62 at New York. Not assigned to the Southfield during the Battle of Plymouth. Wounded in the head Oct 64 due to the bursting of a shell on Broad River, SC onboard the Vermont. Also served on the Brandywine. Member of the Farragut Post, GAR, Philadelphia, PA. Went to the National Soldiers Home, Sawtelle, CA for his health. Died 15 Feb 1892 in the County Hospital and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. Headstone.

WHITE, Charles - Landsman & Coxswain. Born a Slave about 1830 at the White estate in Pasquotank Co., NC, son of Thomas Winslow or Winston. He had a slave wife Lucinda Casey, but she was "stold" from him in 1860. He fathered two children with her. Enlisted 16 March 62 at New Bern, NC, a 28 year old Carpenter & Laborer. Served on the Philadelphia until 24 March when he was assigned to the Southfield. Severely wounded in the right eye on 19 April 64 when a comrade raised his musket too quickly and struck Charles in the face with the breach of the gun. He stated his eye was "knocked out." Captured when the Southfield sank. He went to see a rebel Doctor but he would not treat his eye. Prisoner in Plymouth for 7 months & 5 days until he escaped at the retaking of Plymouth. He witnessed the destruction of the Ram Albemarle. He was a POW within a 30 yard distance from the ram Albemarle. During imprisonment, he was used to wait on the officers of the ram. Rescued 23 Nov 64 by the Shamrock. He then served on the Shamrock under Capt. William McComb until discharged 8 May 65 at Edenton Bay, NC. Married 12 Dec 1868 to Alice Jackson by Rev. Pitts at Elizabeth City, NC. Later moved to VA.

WHITE, Fred - Seaman - Captured at Plymouth, NC. Arrived 2 May 64 at Andersonville, GA and was admitted to the prison hospital with Dysentery. Sent 5 May 64 to the stockade. (Squad 8, 2nd Mess) Admitted 31 Aug to the prison hospital with Scorbutus and returned to the stockade.

WHITE, Johnson - 1st Class Boy - Black - Born in Clairmont, VA. Enlisted 7 June 62 in VA; a 50 year old Blacksmith. Missing after Battle of Plymouth, NC.

WHITE, Manassa - Landsman - Black - Born 1845 in Bertie Co., NC. Enlisted 18 June 62 at Roanoke Island, NC at age 19. Served on the Hunchback until transferred to the Southfield. After the sinking of the Southfield, he was picked up on 22 April 64 in Albemarle Sound. Onboard the Miami 23 April 64. Transferred to the Hetzel and then the Constellation. After the war he lived in Whites Twp, Bertie Co., PA.

WILKINSON, Philip - Landsman - Black - Born about 1835 in Anne Arundel Co., MD. Enlisted 25 July 62 at Baltimore, MD; a 27 year old Seaman. 5'9" Mustered 31 Dec 62. Discharged 3 June 65. Also served on the Alleghany, I. N. Seymour & Commodore Barney.
