APPLETON, Francis - Acting Hospital Steward. Born in London, England. Enlisted 7 Dec 63 at NY City in Co. K, 158th NY Infantry as a Private and a 29 year old Druggist. Transferred to Co. D, 100th NY Infantry. Detailed as a Clerk until 31 Dec 63 at Headquarters S.D., Beaufort, NC. Detached 29 Feb 64 as Acting Hospital Steward to the Contraband Hospital, New Bern, NC. Ordered April 64 to Plymouth, NC. No further info. The following account regarding Appleton comes from the History of the 101st PA, page 135. He is mistakenly identified as a hospital steward of the 85th New York and the account states that he had been a druggist at New Orleans at the outbreak of the war and enlisted in the Confederate Army and subsequently deserted. Capt. Donaghy (103rd PA) says of him: "Surrender meant death to him, and when our flag went down, he, in his desperation, swallowed a dose of morphine to end his life, but was saved by the surgeon and others, who by vigorous means prevented him from sleeping until the drug's power had passed away. After his recovery he devoted himself to his duties and rendered valuable aid to the surgeons in the care of the wounded, living in continual dread of being recognized and shot as a deserter. He was in the ranks near me as we were going to the cars at Weldon. A rebel non-commissioned officer, with a squad of men came along our rank and asked me if I knew Appleton. I said 'No,' but he was recognized and pointed out by one of the rebels. Appleton had a look of despair on his face, which was shaded by the slouch hat which he had drawn down in a vain effort at concealment. It was very sad to see him led away. I never heard of him again." I have been unsuccessful in locating a Confederate unit that he served in. However, I feel pretty confident this is the correct "Appleton."
