ALLEN, James - Sergeant, Co. I. Born in Accomack Co., VA. Enrolled 25 Jan 64 at Drummondtown, VA, an 18 year old 5'4" Farmer. Mustered 27 Feb 64 into Co. H at Camp Hamilton, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty. Transferred 24 Aug 64 to Co. I. Promoted 25 Oct 64 to Sergeant. Died 20 Sept 64 of Typhoid Fever and Inflammation of the Lungs in the hospital at City Point, VA.

ASH, Egypt - Private, Co. F. Free before 19 April 61. Born in Nansemond Co., VA. Enrolled 27 Nov 63 at Craney Island, VA, a 28 year old 5' 4 1/2" Farmer. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA as a Private. Promoted to Corporal. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty. Returned to regiment 25 April 64. Appointed to 5th Sergeant on 1 May 64. Reduced 6 Feb 65 to Private due to general inefficiency and disobedience of orders. Mustered out 17 May 66 at Galveston, TX.

BAKER, Joseph - Private, Co. D. Born a Slave in Folston, FL. Married 11 Feb 1860 to Catherine Foster at Croatan, Carteret Co., NC with the consent of their Master Edward Mollett. Enlisted 30 Oct 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA, a 26 year old Laborer. 5’6”. Mustered in 27 Nov 63. Detailed Dec 63 as Regimental Headquarters Cook. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured at Plymouth, NC. Exchanged. 20 day furlough which started 23 Aug 65. Rejoined regiment. Died June 1866 of Small Pox while home on furlough at New Bern, NC. Widow Catherine applied 3 Aug 1868 for a pension.

BAKER, William Frederick - Major. Born 9 June 1836 in Bingham, Somerset Co., Maine, son of William & Matilda (Chamberlain) Baker. First commissioned as Captain 22 Sept 61 of Co. D, 9th Maine Infantry, a 25 year old Farmer from Moscow, ME. Resigned 20 March 63 as Major. Appointed Major in the 10th USCT on 9 Nov 63 & mustered in 6 Dec 63 at Fortress Monroe, VA. On recruiting duty 28 March 64 at Plymouth, NC. 2nd Lieut. John A. Reed, 2nd NC Union Volunteers, stated that a Major Baker from the "10th Maine" came with him to Plymouth from Roanoke Island on April 18th, 1864. Captured 20 April 1864 at Plymouth, NC. Exchanged 3 Aug 64 at Charleston, SC. Rejoined the regiment in Sept 64. On detached service 23 Jan till Feb 65 at City Point, VA. April & May 65 on detached service with 5 companies at Point Lookout, MD. 18 Jan to April 66 to Headquarters, Department of Texas. After the war, he was a Lumber Manufacturer in Skowhegen, ME, a Conductor in Brunswick, MO and a Lumber Dealer in Kane Twp, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa. Died 2 May 1917 of Carcinoma in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Buried in Walnut Hill Cemetery. Headstone

BROWN, Owen - Corporal, Co. H. Born a slave about 1820 in North West, VA. Mustered in 11 Dec 1863 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 45 year old Farmer. 5'8". Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 1864 at Plymouth, NC. Paroled 21 April 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland. Mustered out 17 May 1866. Became a Farmer in Indian Creek & Butts Road, Norfolk Co., VA after the war. Married to Charlotte who died 11 Nov 1886 at Hickory Ground, Norfolk Co., VA. Owen then re-married to Easter Ferebie. Applied 15 Aug 1887 for Invalid Pension. Died about 1899.

BURROWS, Frederick - Private, Co. G. Born about 1840 in Eastville, Northampton Co., VA. Mustered in 20 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 23 year old Farmer. 5’4½”. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Reportedly killed 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC after surrendering. Also listed as BURROUGHS and BURRAS.

DRUMMER, George - Private, Co. G. Born in Hampton, VA. Enrolled 9 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 21 year old Farmer. 5’6½”. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Dropped from the rolls 31 Aug 65.

ENNELS, Barney - Corporal, Co. G. Born Free in Baltimore, MD, son of Becky Ennels. Enrolled 20 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 17 year old 5'6" Huckster. Mustered 15 Jan 64 at Portsmouth, VA as Private. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty. Appointed Corporal Nov 64. Reduced to the ranks 1 Aug 65 for disobedience of orders. Appointed Corporal 1 Nov 65. Admitted 6 Feb 66 to Post Hospital, Galveston, TX. Returned to duty 16 May 66. Mustered out 17 May 66 at Galveston, TX. He then enlisted 28 Nov 66 in Co. E, 39th U.S. Cavalry. Dishonorably Discharged 22 July 67 at Goldsboro, NC.

HOUSE, Henry W. - Private, Co. G. Born in Cape Charles or Capeville, VA. Enrolled 13 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 19 year old Farmer. 5’2½”. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured at Plymouth, NC. Confined at the hospital in Goldsboro, NC where he escaped & returned to company in May 65. Discharged June 65. Married Mary Ash on 22 Feb 1875 in Lawrence, Essex Co., MA. He worked in a cotton mill in Lawrence, MA. Worked in the U.S. Navy Yard at Portsmouth and Norfolk, VA. Applied 14 July 1891 for Invalid Pension. Mary died 20 Feb 1920 and Henry died 27 Dec 1929 of Pneumonia at the National Soldier's Home, Elizabeth City, VA. Buried in Portsmouth, VA.

LAFAYETTE, Marcus - Private, Co. F. Born in Norfolk, VA. Enrolled 3 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 35 year old Farmer. 5’5½". Mustered in 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured "16" April 64 at Plymouth, NC. No information since. Dropped from rolls 31 Aug 65.

McCLENNY, Madison - Private, Co. F. Born a Slave about 1828 in Norfolk, VA. Married to Julia A. Enrolled 30 Nov 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 37 year old Farmer. 5’7½". Mustered in 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 on recruiting duty. Returned to the regiment on 25 April. Detailed Nov 64 as Company Cook and served in that capacity for the remainder of his enlistment. Mustered out 17 May 66 at Galveston, TX. Died 15 March 1880 and is buried in the Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Portsmouth, VA. Headstone.

NICHOLS, Frederick Washington - Private, Co. H. Freeborn about 1842 in Hickory, VA, the son of Sarepta Nichols. Enrolled 10 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 21 year old Farmer from St. Brides Parish, Norfolk Co., VA. 5’4½”. Mustered in 17 Dec 63 at Fortress Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured "16" April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Stayed at Plymouth until April 23rd when he was taken with Gen. Wessells and his staff on the C.S.S. Cotton Plant to Weldon, NC and then by rail to Richmond where they arrived April 26th. POW at Richmond, VA. Held prisoner until 15 March 65 when he escaped and reported to the Union lines. Detailed 26 March 65 for service in the General Hospital. Returned to duty May 65. Mustered out 17 May 1866 at Galveston, Texas. Married to Caroline, dau. of Jesse Corprew. Fred died 25 Nov 1880 near Hickory on the farm of Eugene Ives, Norfolk Co., VA. Widow Caroline applied 7 Aug 1889 for pension. Caroline remarried May 1894 to William Jennings who also had served in the 10th USCT.

PARMENTER, Daniel Webster - 2nd Lieutenant, Co. G. Born 29 Nov 1843 in Framingham, Middlesex Co., MA, the son of Daniel & Emily Parmenter. Attended Norwich University, Northfield, Vermont. First enlisted 18 July 62 into Co. H, 32nd MA Infantry; a 21 year old Farmer from Framingham, MA. Mustered in 11 Aug 62 as a Sergeant. Appointed 2nd Lieut in the 10th USCT on 7 Nov 63. Discharged from the 32nd MA for promotion 10 Nov 63. Mustered into Co. G on 13 Jan 64 at Fortress Monroe, VA to date 26 Nov 63. He was granted a 20 day furlough on 27 Feb 64. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Returning prisoners reported that he had been shot while trying to escape at Tarboro, NC. Cenotaph in Spring Hill Cemetery, Marlborough, MA states that he died at Weldon, NC.

POWELL, Henry - Private, Co. H. Born a slave in Halifax, NC. Enrolled 11 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 21 year old Farmer. 5’1”. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Dropped from rolls 31 Aug 65.

SMITH, Alberry - Private, Co. H. Freeborn 27 March 1847 in Norfolk Co., VA, the son of Holloway & Margaret "Peggy" (Sevills) Smith. Enrolled 10 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 19 year old Farmer from St. Brides Parish, Norfolk Co., VA. 5’6”. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Per Private David V. Smith, he was shot in the head by a "Zouave" Confederate and died 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC while "endeavoring to get outside of the fortification." Father applied 31 March 1875 for pension.

SMITH, Frederick - Private, Co. G. Born a Slave Oct 1846 near Hampton, VA, son of Abraham & Patsey Smith. Slaves of Lewis and Rosa J. Davis. Frederick's sister Sarah married about 1860 to Jackson Curtis. Enrolled 9 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 17 year old Farmer. 5’5½”. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured and killed 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Frederick Nichols states that he "saw him when he was captured by the Confederates, and saw Frederick Smith shot down dead. That Frederick Smith attempted to get away from the Confederates and was shot down while running from them. He was shot just outside the fort at Plymouth, North Carolina." Probably at Fort Williams. Mother Patsey applied 30 March 1877 for a pension.

THOMAS, John - Private, Co. F. Born free at Western Branch, VA. Enlisted 26 Nov 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA, a 19 year old 5' 8 1/2" Farmer. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Escaped during the battle of Plymouth. Returned to regiment 28 April 64. Mustered out 17 May 66 at Galveston, TX.

WILLIAMS, Henry - 4th Sergeant, Co. F. Born in Portsmouth, VA. Enrolled 10 Oct 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA, a 27 year old 5' 9 1/2" Baker. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA as Private. Detailed on recruiting duty from 26 Nov 63 to 25 April 64. Appointed 27 June to date 1 May 64 as 4th Sergeant. Accidentally killed by gunshot 31 Aug 1864 in camp at Clark's Station, VA.

WILSON, Josiah - Corporal, Co. F. Born a Slave 1839 in Norfolk Co., VA, son of Nathaniel & Hesse Wilson. Enrolled 3 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 24 year old Farmer from St. Brides Parish, Norfolk Co., VA. 5’11½”. Mustered in 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA as a Private. Promoted 1 May 64 to Corporal. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. "Shot for Dead" and captured April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Stayed at Plymouth until April 23rd when he was taken with Gen. Wessells and his staff on the C.S.S. Cotton Plant to Weldon, NC and then by rail to Richmond where they arrived April 26th. POW at Richmond, VA. Prisoner of war until released 21 April 65 at Johnson's surrender. Mustered out to date 17 July 65 when he returned home and reported by letter to the commanding officer of his company. Married to Courtney V. F. Seville. Applied 6 July 1869 for Invalid Pension. Lived in Great Bridge, Norfolk Co., VA after the war. Died 25 Aug 1893 in Pleasant Grove, Norfolk Co., VA.

WILSON, Robert - Private, Co. H. Born a Slave in Norfolk, VA. Enlisted 10 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA, a 21 year old 5' 2 1/2" Farmer. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. After enlistment he went with Lieut. Parmenter in search of deserters. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Captured 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Remained at Plymouth until the re-taking of Plymouth after the sinking of the Albemarle. Absent in the hospital 20 March 65. Discharged 3 May 65 from Balfour General Hospital, Portsmouth, VA. Discharged 28 June 65 at Fort Monroe Hospital, VA. Applied 29 Oct 1877 for an Invalid pension.

WRIGHT, Cornelius - Sergeant, Co. H. Born a Slave in Nansemond Co., VA. Enlisted 30 Nov 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA a 22 year old 5'6" Farmer. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA as Private. Detailed March 64 on recruiting duty. Promoted 3 Aug 64 to Sergeant to date 1 July 64. Admitted 1 April 65 to the General Hospital, Point Lookout, MD. Discharged 11 June 65. Died 24 June 1927. Buried in Calvary Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.

WYSON, William - Private, Co. G. Born a Slave in New Bern, NC. Enlisted 9 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA a 19 year old 5'9" Farmer. Mustered 17 Dec 63 at Fort Monroe, VA. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty. Appointed 9 July 64 to Sergeant. Reduced to Private for striking Private John Gaines, Co. G, on the head with his gun during drill at Point of Rocks, VA on 3 Aug 64. $10 was deducted from his monthly pay and kept at hard labor for 8 hours a day for 10 consecutive days. Under Court Martial 25 Nov 64 for stealing $32 on 21 Nov from Private Edward Burden, Co. A, while at the Post Hospital, City Point, VA. They sentenced him "To have his head shaved and be drummed out of the service, in the presence of his regiment, with a placard marked 'Thief,' placed on his back; and that he be confined at hard labor for two years, at such place as the competent authority may direct." Confined 21 May 65 at Clinton Prison, Dannemora, NY.  Sentence remitted 30 Dec 65, released from prison, and Dishonorably Discharged.
