Fisk. who commanded our squad, was reduced from command for not reprting that Capt. Sampson had escaped." He successfully escaped a second time from Columbia on 17 March 65. Resigned 8 June 65. SMITH, James - Private, Co. G. No. 1 Gunner, 32-pounder Columbiad, Fort Williams. A half-breed Indian from Webster, MA. Credited with saving Sgt. Benjamin Baxter's life at Fort Williams. About 10 am on the morning of April 20th, as Smith was about to load his cannon, a spent shell with the fuse burning landed within 5 feet of both Smith & Baxter. Smith grabbed the shell and threw it out of the fort just in time. Killed 20 April 1864 at Fort Williams, Plymouth, NC. "Smith was tore to pieces by a shell exploding in the mouth of his gun". James does not appear on the original roster but his story was told by George O. Brown of Co. G.
