Confirmed African American Casualties

BURROWS, Frederick - Private, Co. G, 10th USCT. Born about 1840 in Eastville, Northampton Co., VA. Mustered in 20 Dec 63 at Craney Island, Portsmouth, VA; a 23 year old Farmer. 5’4½”. Detailed 26 March 64 to recruiting duty at Plymouth, NC. Killed 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC supposedly after surrendering.

GARRETT, Dolphus – Colored Cook and Corporal, Co. K, 103rd PA. Reported to have been killed 20 April 1864 “while escaping” during the Battle at Plymouth, NC. Being that he was not just a Cook but a Corporal, it is highly likely that he was armed. He could possibly be considered a massacre victim, but there are not enough facts to prove either way. My guess is that he was one of the soldiers in the swamp.

GRANVILLE, Samuel – Colored Cook, Co. B, 103rd PA. MIA after the battle. Supposedly killed. Possible massacre victim but no proof.

JOHNSON, Alexander “Alec” – Colored Waiter to the Officers of Co. C, 85th NY. He “refused to surrender, and fell fighting on his own account, pierced with bullets.” His death is mentioned as heroic and not as a victim.

REDDICK, Anderson – Private, 37th USCT. Killed during the Battle of Plymouth. NC.

RUFFIN, Peter – Private, 37th USCT. Killed during the Battle of Plymouth, NC.

MITCHELL, George – Private, 2nd USCC. Recruiting at Plymouth, NC. Killed April 1864 during the Battle of Plymouth.

SMITH, Alberry - Private, Co. H, 10th USCT. Per Private David V. Smith, he was shot in the head by a “Zouave” Confederate and died 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC while "endeavoring to get outside of the fortification."

SMITH, Frederick - Private, Co. G, 10th USCT. Captured and killed 20 April 64 at Plymouth, NC. Private Frederick Nichols states that he "saw him when he was captured by the Confederates, and saw Frederick Smith shot down dead. That Frederick Smith attempted to get away from the Confederates and was shot down while running from them. He was shot just outside the fort at Plymouth, North Carolina." Probably at Fort Williams. This account is suspect because there is a letter in his pension file from Smith to his mother dated 10 July 64 at City Point, VA.

WASHINGTON, Amanda (Speller) – Civilian. Wife of George Washington, Colored Cook and Private, 24th NY Battery. Killed during the battle.
