Men were being recruited for the USCTs in the area of Plymouth, NC. A complete list of the 37th USCT recruits who were involved in the Battle of Plymouth is not known. The following list contains men who were recruited at Plymouth, but not necessarily at the battle. For additions or corrections to the following list, please contact Edward Boots

*ALLEN, Seneca - Captain, 85th NY Infantry. Born 23 April 1840 in New Hudson, NY, son of Calvin Allen, M.D. Enrolled 3 Sept 61 at Black Creek, NY at age 21. Mustered in 20 Oct 61 as Captain. Commissioned 7 Jan 62 with rank from 3 Sept 61. Detailed to command the black recruits after the Battle of Plymouth began. He was captured during the battle and was held prisoner at Macon & Savannah, GA; Charleston & Columbia, SC and Richmond, VA. He escaped from prison twice but was recaptured. Paroled on 26 March 1865. Mustered out 7 April 65. With William Clark's promotion to Colonel, Seneca was Commissioned 19 Aug 65 as Lieutenant Colonel with rank from 15 May 65 but not mustered. Died 14 Nov 1892 at Buffalo, NY. ARMSTEAD, John - Private, Co. E. Enrolled 25 Dec 63 at Plymouth, NC. Promoted to Corporal 1 March 64. Reduced 1 Aug 65.

ASKIE, Bryant - Private, Co. C. Born in Bertie Co., NC. Enrolled 6 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 25 year old Farmer. 5'3". Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA.  Went home on furlough Dec 65 for 30 days. Detailed Jan 66 - Aug 66 at Bald Head Garrison. Discharged 11 Feb 1867 at Raleigh, NC. Applied 15 March 1893 for pension #1148863/998825 Liberia, Africa. Widow Sarah applied 14 Nov 1903 for pension #794634/573639 Liberia - She states their marriage is recorded in Bertie Co., NC. Moved to Monrovia, Liberia in 1869. Caroline Freeman contested the pension stating that she was the wife of Bryant. Neither Bryant or Sarah knew her. The Pension Office stated she was a fraud. A minor pension was filed 29 June 1892 #553797/blank.

ASKIE, Charles - Private, Co. C. Born about 1846 in Bertie Co., NC. Enrolled 6 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, an 18 year old Farmer. 5’4”. Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA. Detached Dec 64 - April 65 to Brigade HQ. Detached Sept - Dec 65 at Wilmington, NC.  Assigned 21 Sept 65 as an Orderly for the Freedman’s Bureau. Confined Nov - Dec 1866 for manslaughter. Confined 11 Feb 1867 at Castle Pinckney, Charleston Harbor, SC awaiting trial for manslaughter. No court martial listed in the JAG index and no further info.

ASKIE, George - Private, Co. C. Born about 1824 in Bertie Co., NC. Married 15 Dec 1843 to Nancy Askie (Agreement to co-habitate as Husband & Wife since no formal ceremony since they were Slaves). Enrolled 6 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 40 year old Farmer. 5’6”. Mustered in 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA. Assigned 21 Sept 65 as Post Hospital guard. Went home 25 Dec 65 on furlough for 30 days. Accidentally drowned 4 Jan 1867 near Fort Sumter, Charleston, SC. They were loading timber on a boat at Fort Sumter to take to Castle Pinckney. The rough water caused the load to shift, knocking him overboard. Widow Nancy applied 25 March 67 for pension #144605/117262. Nancy later moved to Liberia, West Africa.

ASKIE (ASKEW), Henry - Private, Co. C. Born about 1838 in Bertie Co., NC, slave of Dr. Andrew Jackson Askie.. Enrolled 6 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 25 year old Farmer. 5'7". Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk. VA. Detached Feb 65 to the Pioneers. Detached March - April 65 to Division Headquarters. Served 21 Sept 65 as a Post hospital guard. Discharged 11 Feb 67 at Raleigh, NC. Harriett Askew, Guardian pension 8 Jan 1891 492281 NC. Reported to have gone to Liberia.

ASKIE, Isaac - Private, Co. C. Born about 1829 in Bertie Co., NC. Enrolled 6 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 35 year old Farmer. Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA. BAKER, William Austin - Private, Co. C. Born in Hertford Co., NC. Enrolled 17 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 21 year old 5' 3 1/2" Farmer. Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA. Detached 11 May 64 to the Pioneer Corps and served as a Pioneer until July. Absent sick Sept 65. Mustered out 11 Feb 67 at Raleigh, NC. Applied 20 Aug 1892 for an Invalid Pension.

BELL, Samuel - Private, Co. C. Born in Hyde Co., NC. Enrolled 27 Dec 63 at Plymouth, NC, a 19 year old 5'8" Farmer. Mustered 30 Jan 64 at Norfolk, VA. AWOL 30 Jan until 29 Feb 64. Deserted 14 May 64 at City Point, VA.

*BERDEN, John - Private, Co. F. Born in Bertie Co., NC. Enrolled 19 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 35 (28?) year old Farmer. 5’7”. Escaped during the Battle of Plymouth. Reported as being picked up by the U.S. Navy gunboats. Affidavit of John Ward states they enlisted at Plymouth, participated in the Battle of Plymouth, escaped back to Union lines in VA and then to City Point. Mustered in 24 May 64 at City Point, VA. Detached service to the 18th Army Corps Medical Department as a Nurse until Aug 65. Served at U.S.A. Base Hospital, 18th Army Corps, Point of Rocks, VA. 30 day furlough in Sept 65. Detached service Dec 65 to Roanoke Island, NC. Discharged 11 Feb 1867 at Raleigh, NC. Married to Emily Rodgers who was born Feb 1851. Death listed as 16 Nov 1900 in Elizabeth City, NC, but Emily applied 26 Sept 1896 for a widow's pension 641109/464193 NC. Buried in the "GAR" cemetery with a government headstone. Also listed as BURDIN, BERDAN and BURDEN.

*BERDEN, George - Private, Co. D. Born about 1840 in Bertie Co., NC. Enrolled 1 Jan 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 24 year old Farmer from Bertie Co., NC. Assisted Captain Marvin with recruiting. Captured during the Battle of Plymouth, NC. Returned to slavery after his capture. Escaped. Corporal James Harris, Co. D, 37th USCT stated he saw him when he was paroled at N.E. Ferry, Wilmington, NC, so unsure if he was returned to slavery or not. Rejoined the regiment in August 65. Mustered out 11 Feb 1867 at Raleigh, NC. Also listed as BURDIN, BERDAN and BURDEN.

COOPER,  Rhoden - Private, Co. E. Born in Bertie Co., NC. Enlisted 16 Feb 64 at Plymouth, NC, a 19 year old Farmer. Mustered 5 March 64 at Norfolk, VA. Fell out of ranks 21 June 64 while on the march from Bermuda Hundred near Petersburg, VA. Marked as Deserter. Desertion charge dropped. Died 5 July 64 of Typhoid Fever in the Hospital for Colored Troops, City Point, VA.

Detached 5 Jan 65 as guard and teamster at the Brigade Commissary. Killed 20 July 1865 by an enlisted man of the 27th USCT in an encounter at the QM Wagon Train Post, Wilmington, NC. Admitted 6 March 65 to the Officer's Hospital. Arrived at the camp of the 37th USCT on 10 March 65. Granted 30 day Leave of Absence on 13 March 65. He was examined on 18 April 65 by Dr. Roderick Stebbins of Friendship, NY. Dr. Stebbins reported to the Army that Hiram was unfit for duty for at least 60 days. Reported back to Camp Parole. Hiram felt that he was unfit for duty and tendered his resignation on 13 May 65 and was discharged 3 June 65 at Wilmington, NC. Married about 1866 to Rosaltha. Died 24 Oct 1901 and buried in Elmwood Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson Co., Missouri.

Participated in the Battle of Plymouth. Wounded in the head by a shell fragment and fell on the tongue of an artillery caisson injuring his ribs when he fell. He was also wounded by a musket ball in his left arm. He was wounded in the vicinity of the gun emplacement next to Harriet Toodles house on the right of the line. He "played dead" until dark when he made his way to the swamp and escaped making his way to Washington, NC. Joined back up with the 37th USCT at Norfolk, VA. Mustered 31 May 64 at Norfolk, VA.
