2613. HODGES, Horace Isaac - Captain. Assistant Quartermaster of U.S. Volunteers. Born 12 June 1818 in Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, son of Isaac & Margaret (Luther) Hodges. Married 20 Sept 1844 to Sarah Mather Hutchins. Served as a Lawyer in Hampshire Co., MA. Enrolled 2 Nov 62. Assigned 1 April 64 to Gen. Wessells' staff as Depot Quartermaster. Accidentally drowned 19 April 1864 in the Roanoke River by the upsetting of a canoe. After the war, when his coffin was opened in preparation for re-interment at New Bern National Cemetery, the body was identified simply as "Capt. Hodges." The workers did not believe that this was his true identity since he was not buried in a military uniform. Because of this, he is not properly identified on his headstone. It simply reads, "Hodges." There is also a possible Cenotaph at Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA.
