Buried in Plymouth Cemetery. Reburied at New Bern National Cemetery, NC. Grave 1166. There are two headstones in separate places in Section 7 with grave # 1166. Both have Metzler's name on them! Believe the grave closest to the road as his true grave. On 30 Nov 63 his widow Jane applied for pension #39755/62535.  12 Jan 67 minor pension #140418/116376.  1890 Census: widow Jane Simmers (no dates); res.: Oakland. Headstone

U.S.

HODGES, Horace Isaac - Captain. Assistant Quartermaster of U.S. Volunteers. Born 12 June 1818 in Berkshire Co., Massachusetts, son of Isaac & Margaret (Luther) Hodges. Married 20 Sept 1844 to Sarah Mather Hutchins. Served as a Lawyer in Hampshire Co., MA. Enrolled 2 Nov 62. Assigned 1 April 64 to Gen. Wessell's staff as Depot Quartermaster. Accidentally drowned 19 April 1864 in the Roanoke River by the upsetting of a canoe. After the war, when his coffin was opened in preparation fpr re-interment at New Bern National Cemetery, the body was identified simply as "Capt. Hodges." The workers did not believe that this was his true identity since he was not buried in a military uniform. Because of this, he is not properly identified on his headstone in Section 15, Grave 2613. It simply reads, "Hodges." There is also a possible Memorial Stone at Bridge Street Cemetery, Northampton, Hampshire Co., MA.
